Further step in regulation of Health and Social Care Professionals
31 October 2014:
Statutory registration for Dietitians and Speech and Language Therapists has commenced.
Members of both professions are invited to apply for registration at www.coru.ie. The opening of the two new registers mark a further milestone in the regulation of the health and social care profession listed for regulation by the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005 (as amended).
The opening of these additional registers alongside the existing Social Workers and Radiographers and Radiation Therapists Registers will afford greater protection to the public by ensuring high standards of conduct, education, training and competence are met by those applying to register.
New statutory Codes of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Dietitians and for Speech and Language Therapists have been adopted to underpin the regulation of these professions. The Codes of Professional Conduct and Ethics were prepared after consultation with the general public, members of the relevant professions and with their representative bodies and employers. The Codes specify the standards of ethics, performance and conduct required of registered Dietitians and Speech and Language Therapists in a clear and accessible manner.
Welcoming the opening of the two new Registers, Ms Ginny Hanrahan, Chief Executive of CORU said: “Today is a further significant step on the journey to a fully regulated environment for health and social care professionals in Ireland. On behalf of CORU, I would like to acknowledge the work of the voluntary members of both the Dietitians Registration Board and the Speech and Language Therapists Registration Board in achieving today's signifcant event."
