Protection of Professional Titles

You are here: Registration » Protection of Titles

Only practitioners who are registered can use a protected title.  The professional titles covered by the Act are:-

Clinical Biochemist

Physiotherapist

Dietitian

Psychologist

Medical Scientist

Radiographer

Occupational Therapist

Social Care Worker

Orthoptist

Social Worker

Podiatrist

Speech and Language Therapist

When regulation of all the professions by CORU is fully operational this will mean that the public as well as the profession will be protected from fraudulent practitioners who use professional titles that they are not entitled to use. These practitioners can and will be prosecuted under the legislation.

Anyone using one of these titles and not registered maybe guilty of an offence and may be subject to prosecution and a fine of up to €3,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or both. It is also an offence to intend to deceive by falsely representing oneself to be registered in our registers.
