Michael Walsh
Professor Michael Walsh is currently a Professor of Biomedical Device Engineering at University of Limerick. In 2022, Prof Walsh was elected to the World Council of Biomechanics for a 12-year term. He has also served as a Visiting Professor at McGill University, Montreal, Canada and the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 2019.
Having secured in excess of €6m (33 awards) since 2005, Prof Walsh’s research focuses on an improved understanding of the host response to the treatment of vascular diseases. His primary area of research investigates how disease caused by vascular surgical interventions (intimal hyperplasia) is instigated/mediated by hemodynamics. Elucidating the role of diseased tissue in device performance is a crucial step towards the understanding of how surgical treatments lead to disease formation and how treatments can be improved to minimise disease formation. His secondary area of research is urological devices and how these devices can be improved for better patient outcomes.
