May Cleary
May Cleary was appointed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery UCC/University Hospital Waterford (UHW) in 2019 having previously been appointed as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in UHW in 2011. She is lead orthopaedic clinician for South/SouthWest Hospital Group on the National Programme for Trauma and Orthopaedics. She is head of the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics at University Hospital Waterford/Kilcreene Regional Orthopaedic Hospital, Kilkenny and is the lead orthopaedic trainer for higher surgical training in UHW. She is a project sponsor for the national office of trauma services. She has led a research and quality improvement group comprising of both clinicians and musculoskeletal physiotherapists in UHW.
May is a fellowship trained lower limb arthroplasty (joint replacement) surgeon who also deals with general trauma/sports injuries in trauma unit with a catchment population of over 500,000.
She is co-director of the MCh in Surgical Science in UCC and lectures/mentors research for other related postgraduate programmes such as MSc Anatomy and MSc Physiotherapy. She is AO trauma faculty involved in courses training orthopaedic surgeons internationally and chairs the AO principles of fracture management course annually.
