About the Social Care Workers Registration Board
The Minister for Health, Leo Varadkar TD, confirmed on 27 March 2015 the establishment of and appointment of members to the Social Care Workers Registration Board, under the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005 (amended) to regulate the profession of social care worker.
The register opened on 30 November 2023, and the title of social care worker will become officially protected on 30 November 2025. During these 2 years that a register is open, existing practitioners can apply for registration during the transitional period.
The Social Care Workers Registration Board at CORU has statutory responsibility for the:
- Establishing and maintaining a Register of members of the profession.
- Assessing, approving and monitoring training courses for the health and social care professions under the Act.
- Establishing the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics and standards of performance to which social care workers must adhere.
The Social Care Workers Registration Board is the designated Competent Authority and is responsible for recognition of qualifications gained outside the State.
