Criteria and Standards of Proficiency
In order to protect the public, CORU requires educational bodies to deliver qualifications that prepare professionals to provide safe and appropriate care.
In order for a programme to be approved by CORU it must meet the criteria for education and training programmes. These include the standards that all education and training programmes across all of the professions regulated by CORU must meet, as well as the profession specific standards for education and training programmes.
The Criteria for Education and Training Programmes describe how the education provider ensures the achievement of the standards of proficiency. They are used for programme approval and monitoring to ensure that all graduates, attain the standards of proficiency, required for public protection.
The standards of proficiency are the threshold standards of practice set by a Registration Board for safe and effective practice. The standards of proficiency provide detail on the knowledge and skills that all registrants must have. In the approval and monitoring of education and training programmes, the standards of proficiency are used to ensure that graduates of a programme holding a specific qualification have the required knowledge and skills to practice safely in a given profession.
